Commencement Frequently Asked Questions

  • This is a formal ceremony. Dress slacks or skirts/dresses are appropriate. Do not wear jeans.
  • We encourage students to wear comfortable dress shoes for walking and standing. Tennis shoes or gym shoes are not appropriate. No specific color of shoes are required.
  • Do not wear decorations or jewelry on the outside of your gown.
  • See Jean Wolfe in the Exchange if you do not have appropriate attire.
The commencement ceremony typically lasts approximately one and a half to two hours. Total ceremony time may vary.
  • May graduates will not receive their diplomas during the Commencement Ceremony.
  • August and December graduates will receive their diplomas approximately one month after classes are complete.
  • Diplomas are only issued when you have completed all degree requirements and paid all balances due.
The tassel hangs over the right front corner then is moved to the left after the degree is conferred.

Graduate candidates should arrive 45 minutes prior to the start of the ceremony. All candidates will meet in The Learning Commons.

Family and guests can begin arriving 45 minutes prior to the ceremony. They should go directly to the Ancilla Domini Chapel or Cana Hall as appropriate.

We respectfully request that all family members and guests go directly to the venue so that staff can assist graduates with line-up.

On July 1, 2021, Marian University has officially opened a new location on the former campus of Ancilla College in Plymouth, Indiana. In recognition of the shared missions and solely to honor the history of Ancilla College, the new location is named Marian University's Ancilla College.
